Click on Matches in the top navigation, then, in the right side toolbox click Create a match. If the teams for the match already exist on youfoot it should take you seconds to create a match.

Watch this video to see how to create a match.

If you are having any issue creating matches, be sure to contact us. we're here to help :)

What information is necessary to create a match?

First, ensure that the teams participating in the match already exist on YouFoot. If it is not the case you will need to create the teams first. Finally, you will be asked to specify the rules (standrad football, futsal, beach soccer...), where the match will be held at (venue), the date and time the match, and the referee.

If you are creating a match that already took place (in the past), you may also enter the score for the match.

Note: If you are creating a match that doesn't take place in your time zone, be sure to enter the time in the local time for the match.

Can I edit a match after its creation?

On any match page, in the right side toolbox, click Edit match settings to modify some of the match information.

If the match is upcoming and no one has yet applied to commentate the match you may modify:

  • the ruleset
  • the venue
  • the date and time for the match
  • the referee
For upcoming matches that have candidates to commentate the match, you may only modify the referee since a commentator's election is in the process.

Finished matches may be edited if the match has not been commentated, but will only have limited editing options once matches have been commentated using the Playcom.

What is the option "Open Squad"

When you create "open squad" this allows guest players into the squad you've selected as open. This is handy for amateur match, when you want new players to know they can join your team.

What are scheduling conflict?

When creating a match you may get an error specifying: There has been a scheduling conflict

This means that one of the teams is already playing a match at that time and cannot be playing another match at the same time. Please contact us, if we can help correct an error.

What are two-legs matches?

Two-leg matches are typically used to reduce the chance factor in knockout elimination. Two matches are played (on leg each in the home stadium of the competing team) and the winner is determined by the aggregated score. For example:

 First leg          Team A  2 - 1  Team B
 Second leg  Team B  3 - 0  Team A
 Aggregated score  Team A      2 - 4  Team B
> ResultTeam B wins

When calculating the aggregated score between the two-legs, away goals will count double. For example:

 First leg          Team A  2 - 1  Team B
 Second leg  Team B  1 - 0  Team A
 Aggregated score  Team A       2 - 3*  Team B
(*Team B's away goal counts double in the aggregated score)
> ResultTeam B wins

If the team are in a perfect tie at the end of the second leg, there will typically be extra time and/or penalty shootouts. Some competitions may also prefer to have the match replayed. YouFoot's Playcom supports all these options.

What is so special about matches on YouFoot?

Professionnal football has involves big stakes. More and more, games are analysed in detailled. Professional teams of statisticians can provided huge insights on these teams, however the insights come with a price. While some statistics may appear from time too time in the media, the whole data are available they remain the jealously prized intellectual properties.

At YouFoot we built tools to allow the football community several reasons:

  1. As fans we want to have access to a large database of football data
  2. We wanted to make professional tools more accessible to any club, not just rich clubs, but even amateur teams.
Contributions to YouFoot are available under Creative Commons' license and is free for anyone to access.

It all starts with matches. When a match is commentated using the Playcom, this produces:
  • Real time commentaries available in multiple languages
  • Real time statistics about all players and teams involved
  • Competitions get updated per the match results automatically
  • Video and images can be attached to actions directly in a match and are easy to find
  • and more
To find out more be sure to checkout the video about how to commentate matches using the playcom.

Commentating a football match using the playcom

What are the prerequisite to commentate a match using the Playcom?

Before you commentate a match make sure:

  • The teams involved exist on YouFoot
  • Both team squad include the correct players for the season
With these information you'll be able the create the match (see the section about Match for more details) and a commentator can be elected.

What is the Playcom?

YouFoot website that lets anyone contribute to build the largest database on football. However to achieve that goal we also want to separate facts and opinions.

We decided to build 2 tools to commentate matches.

The first tool, build play-by-play commentary of a match. We call this tool the Playcom. Users can use the Playcom to describe factually match actions one after another. This generates in real time commentaries in multiple languages and statistics.

The second tool allows users to commentate football matches in real time either with written or audio commentaries. These can be fun, professional, biased for a particular team, anything, so long as they are adding color to the football we love. For that reason we call these Colorcom.

You can follow any of these commentaries in the Live tab of a match when the match is live. You may also check them out, after the match is over in the Commentaries tab.

Why elect a commentator for the Playcom? How does the election process works?

Since the play-by--play commentary of the match is designed to be an objective and factual description of the match, there are no need for more than one Playcom per match: all data produced ought to be identical. Instead, the commentator should be done by someone trusted by the community.

Anyone can be a candidate to commentate a match. Whoever has the most votes 24 hours before the match is elected to commentate that match. If there are no candidates or if the candidates are tied 24 hours before the match, the election is prolongated until 1 hour before the match. If there is still a tie between candidates, the first candidate to have applied will be selected. If there are no candidates to commentate a match less than an hour prior to the match, if the match is live or if it is finished, then the first candidate will be automatically elected.

We hope that this way, everyone can get to participate while also ensuring that people do their best when commentating matches. Should you ever notice errors in a Playcom, please report them and we'll make sure to correct any errors quickly.

Can I edit a match play-by-play commentary? How do I delete an action?

Yes, all match commentaries can be edited by the commentator. In the commentaries tab of a match, there is a link Edit Playcom.

The Playcom will reload with all actions and commentaries entered. In the pane containing action commentaries, simply click on the (edit) at the end of any action commentary to modify an action.

While you are editing an action, you'll see a delete button above the action, if you want to delete it.

The only action that you cannot delete is the Game Start of the match since every other actions depends on this initial game setup. However, if you need you can reset a game completely using the Revision History of the match. This will allow you to start over if the Game Start was not entered properly.

How can I revert the match play-by-play to a previous version?

At the bottom of the Playcom page click on Revert to a previous version, select a version in the list where it says ‘Please choose a revision to view’. Click on Revert to this Version to confirm and the Back to return to the Playcom.

When can people follow my live match commentary?

When the match is live, you can follow the match commentary in the Live tab on the match page.

The playcom also updates statistics that are available in the match page, as well as on the pages of each of the players and teams involved. When a Game conclusion is entered, the competitions tables will be updated.

Once the match is finished, you can see the match commentaries in the Commentaries tab.

I commented a match but the result is not taken in account in various place in website, why?

Although the score almost always determines the outcome of the match, there are some case of special resolution in which a team may be disqualified or a match may be replayed. For that reason, in the playcom, the commentator can enter the Game conclusion. This allows the commentator to verify the conclusion of the match and in case of a special resolution to enter the details for it.

If the commentator forgets to enter the Game Conclusion for a match, although the match has a score, it doesn't have a result.

I don't want to enter play-by-play commentary, can I simply enter the score for the match?

Yes, you can also enter the score of a match instead of a complete match commentary.

When you create a match, if you set the match date in the past, you will have a extra section where you can enter the result for the match.

On any match page, you can click Edit the match settings to enter the score if the match's status is finished.

Entering the score, will not produce almost any statistics for the teams and players, however it will allow you to update a competition with minimal efforts.

I don't want to enter play-by-play commentary, can I simply enter the score for the match?

Note: A commentator can commenThe Playcom of a commentator will always override "Score only" data.

Transfer

Why add a transfer to a player's career?

Add ing transfer ensures the player will appear in the team's squad for the appropriate seasons and for the player to have a proper career's summary in his profile.

The Playcom, which allows you to generate match commentaries and statistics also requires the team's squad to be complete for both home and away team.

What are transfers? Where can I see a team squad? Where can I find the details of a player's career?

A player or staff member can be join a team for a certain period of time. At YouFoot we typically speak of "tranfers" even though it may or not be per say a contractual transfer between two clubs (for instance, players can sign a new contract with a club, and amateur players may not sign contracts at all when joining a team...).

On a team's page, you will see all the players that are in the squad in the squad tab, don't forget the squad may change over time so be sure to select the correct season first (click the season in the team's infobox to change to another season).

On a player's page, you'll find a career tab where you will see all the teams a person has played at or been a staff member at.

How can I make a transfer?

Here are a few ways to add players to a team's squad or to make transfers:

  • Initially when you create a team, you can add players to the squad. Similarly, when you create a player, you can add team to his career.
  • In the squad tab you can quickly add players to the team's squad by clicking Edit squad or
  • In a player's career tab you can edit transfer information (such as start and end date, jersey number...) or add another transfer.

We try to make transfers very easy to make and edit. For instance, when you add a transfer you need to specify a start date, however if you leave this date empty, by default we'll had the player at the start of the team's season. You may not know how long a player will play for a team, so you don't need to specify an end date and this can simply added when the player leaves the squad.

We recommend entering player jersey numbers as it will greatly help to commentate matches. If you edit a jersey number, keep in mind that player jersey may change from time to time especially in the context of a particular competition. For that reason, we even allow commentators to change a player's jersey's number at the start of each match.

What are the required information to add a transfer?

To complete player transfer, you need to indicate the transfer type and for professional transfers you'll need to select the status of the transfer. Then, you wil only have to specify the team that is joined, type of job (player, coach...) and the start date.

How can I edit a transfer?

Choose a player or a staff member, whose transfer you want to edit. On the player’s (staff) page under the infobox you will see the menu with details such as News, Videos& Images, Career… Click on Career, you will see existing transfers in the Professional Career box. Click on Edit, make necessary changes and Save transfer. You can also make changes directly in the Professional Career box by clicking on Dates or Role.

What are amateur, professional and national selections?

When adding a transfer, you can choose amateur if the relationship between a player and the club doesn't involve a salary or a contract.

Professional means that the player receives a salary or is under contract with the club. Also in YouFoot a player may not have professional contracts with 2 clubs at the same time. If you try to add a second professional contract while the players is still playing for another club (for instance if no end date has been entered for his previous club), then you'll be offered to end his previous contract in order to validate your transfer.

National selections describe a player joining his or her national team. You can transfer a player in a national team by selecting first this option.

I have an issue trying to make a transfer, what's wrong?

If you cannot complete a transfer make sure that:
  • you have selected the correct option between: Professional, Amateur, National selection
  • in Team joined make sure you select a team from the drop down list after you type the team's name. if the team doesn't exist yet on YoUFoot, you will need to first create the team.
  • if you are adding a professional transfer make sure to resolve any conflicts with previously added transfers
  • Although we allow players to have identical names on YouFoot (because it happens in real life too :),we currently prevent players with identical first and last name to join the same squad to prevent from confusion and what would be likely duplicates. We think that even in the unlikely event that a team has two players with identical first and last name, for their own sake they ought to be able to differentiate them. For instance, you may want to add one of the player's middle name in the first names.
If you have any issues, be sure to contact us. We're happy to help!

Why cannot I transfer a player?

Please note that a player cannot have two professional contracts at the same time. When you try to complete a transfer for a player that is already playing for another team you'll be offered to end his current contract. This way you won't have anything else to do to complete the transfer you are adding and it will just end his previous contact.

What about loans and co-ownership of players?

Currently, YouFoot doesn't let you specify when a player is loaned to a club or when a player is co-owned by clubs (as it happens in Italy). We look forward adding this in the near future.

What happens if someone deletes or edit a transfer? How can I recover the data?

YouFoot is collaborative, while we believe most people don't intentionally make mistake and even more rarely intentionally delete things, it happens. A collaborative website wouldn't work without some protection against unintentional mistakes or act of vandalism.

For that reason, most data entered in YouFoot is saved and versioned. Transfers is a good example. This means that you can on just a few clicks revert to previous version any erroneous transfer changes or recover deleted transfer.

To revert a transfer that was edited to a previous version simply edit this transfer, then select Revision History and revert to the correct version.
To recover a deleted transfer select show deleted transfer and click undelete.

How can I delete a transfer?

Choose a player or a staff member, whose transfer you want to delete. On the player’s (staff) page under the infobox you will see the menu with details such as News, Videos& Images, Career… Click on Career, you will see existing transfers in the Professional Career box. Click on Delete next to the transfer you want to delete.

How can I add a team?

Click on Teams in the main menu. In the right side menu choose Create a team. Complete the required information and click on Create Team.  Watch the video how to create a team.

What information is necessary to create a team?

To create a team you need to indicate its name, country and city of the 'headquarter', the year of foundation, the season's default start date and season format.

Let's go into a little bit more details about these:

  • Team name: if you are part of a large team or club that have more than one teams be sure to differentiate your team by adding something that set them apart (Spain U17, Chelsea Youth, Arsenal LFC,...)

  • Country and city: to help find players find clubs in their neighborhoods, we ask that you enter the country and city where you team is located. You can enter a complete address that you can make available to the public, however only the country and the city is necessary.

  • Year of foundation: Youfoot will create all the season for your team since the year of foundation of the team. If a team is disbanded, you can also specify that and no seasons will be added after the year at which it was disbanded.

  • Season default start date: in Europe most team pickup training for the new season in July but in South America the new season is around the new year. The date you pick will determine what match belong to what season. For instance, if you pick July 1st then any match between the 1st of July 2010 and the June 30th 2011 will be part of the same season. Statistics are often computed on a season basis so it's important you pick the right date to make sure you will never leave matches out. To be safe, simply take a date in between the end of the season and the start of the next season.

  • Season's display format: you can have seasons be displayed in a yearly format (ex: 2010) or a bi-yearly format (2010-2011). This typically depends on your season start date, but you get to choose what works best for you.

You can also add optional information such as:

  • the team's crest
  • its squad and staff (checkout the FAQ section about transfers)
  • its venues - most notably the stadium (or pitch) that  the team calls "home" but also its training grounds
  • other additional information such as nicknames, ticket sales information and official website.

Nicknames are handy since they will ensure that people can find more easily this team using any name such as abbreviations. Adding a "Stadium" (or pitch) is also handing as it will suggest this venue automatically every time you create a match with that team.
